Pete Mayes And Henry Rollins

This "Pic Of The Week" of KFG bassist Pete Mayes with Henry Rollins [above] brought in an e-mail from our good friend Cole Kojack: "That's a good pic of Pete with Henry Rollins. Jill and I went to see him one time on a spoken word tour and hung around afterwards to say 'Hi.' We were making groupie jokes and I had him sign my arm like a tattoo. I told him I'd never wash again (a la Marcia Brady) and he says 'That's unhygienic, dude. You need to wash up every once in a while.' He is so dry." Yes, yes he is.

Drachen Tops Metal Charts ... On The Internets!

Chester Moore, bassist of of SETX metal band Drachen [pictured above], dropped me some cool news via e-mail - the band is gaining "huge" momentum with it's new single.

"Marching Into Hell" hit the top of the Soundclick Metal Charts which, says Moore, "features more than 60,000 indie and signed artists in daily competition for downloads and plays."

But wait. There's more. "The song debuted at 109 and then shot straight to number one on what is really the only chart out there gauging heavy metal mp3 plays and downloads. There’s a real buzz out there for the song and the CD ["In the Beginning"] and we look forward to taking it all around and playing it for the metal fans," Moore says."

Drachen hosts a CD release show Sat. July 5 at Changing Times on 11th Street in Beaumont, Texas. The show will also include performances by Warchild and Dead Men Walking. Cover is $5 and doors will open at 8 p.m. on the night of the show. Call 409-892-4130 for more info. Check out Drachen's MySpace site at: and send YOUR show info and pics to:

What Are Words For?

This is an entirely personal post, it's about an experience at my day job, which has nothing what-so-ever to do with local music, unless you count the fact that I sell local music at aforementioned day job. So if you're not interested in personal posts, I suggest you stop reading now.

The name of said day job will remain nameless - those of you who know me already know the name and those who don't can rest assured that I will not be entangled in any kind of legal hassle dealing with it.

So yesterday at work a woman comes in with her son and wants to return a disc that she says her son got for his birthday but he doesn't want it and she wants the money back. No receipt though. And company policy is no receipt, no return or exchange.

Sorry, I say, but no return or exchange without a receipt. Company policy and all that.

She screws her face up into a scowl and says "You're RETARDED!"

"I beg your pardon?" I say.

"RETARDED!" she says.

The line of six people behind her stare at her. Her son looks up at her. I look at her, give her a look of pity and say softly, "Ma'am, my younger brother happens to be mentally retarded."

Her son looks shocked. The people in line give her "What a fuckin' BITCH" looks. She grabs her son and stomps off.

Yeah, I'm well aware that people use the words "gay" and/or "retarded" instead of "dumb," "lame" or "uncool" when something doesn't go their way. Here's the thing. Saying the word "retarded" to me is like spitting in my face. When you grow up defending your younger brother against haters hurling the word "retard" around, it carries emotional weight.

So in conclusion, say "retarded" to me and you shoot to the top of my shit-list.

Easton Is A Punk Rocker

This is my grandson, Easton. He's going to be 6-years-old on June 19, which is cool because every Juneteenth is like a big party for him. Easton graduated from Kindergarten on Monday and since it was my day off, we hung out together all day. He's a very cool kid who's extremely smart for his age and he's got excellent taste. His favorite T-shirt? The Ramones, of course. Thanks to KFG, he thinks I'm a ROCKSTAR and he wants to be a rockstar when he grows up - all well as a firefighter. Riding around in my black Ford, I taught him some classics like "Rock N Rool PRE-School," "EASTON Is A Punk Rocker" and "TV Party" [we changed the lyrics to "we've got nothin' better to do / than to watch TV and have some APPLE JUICE" and shouted out shows like "Bob The Builder!"]. While he loves his Pop the rockstar and marvels at my pierced ears and [3] tattoos, he's even more impressed with the lovely lady Nepenthe, who has 22 tattoos and something like an equal number of piercings. "You're a rockstar," Easton says to me, "But she's a REAL rockstar!" Like I said he's got excellent taste.
